An overview of our school...

We've been open a year, we're foreign/Korean-owned, we have a reputation around town as being a high-end, but very effective school that encourages hard work through the building of relationships built on mutual respect between student and teacher.

We ask a lot of our students, and  try to deliver a high-quality education, and have had some recent successes at that - we recently had three students not only get accepted into the province's foreign language high school, but two of the students went 1st and 2nd overall respectively in the province, and the 3rd girl ranked in the top ten.  We also currently have some up and coming students that we have very high hopes for, so we do take our job seriously and are always trying to improve.

We have a high-standard that we like to maintain, but along with working hard, we also like to play hard.  We personally think (if we may say so ourselves) that the working environment here is quite possibly the best around as our school is quite small (currently four teachers, boss (my wife) included), all of our staff get along quite well - we've all been friends for years - everyone has been teaching for years, and is very down to earth and willing to help each other out.

We do have a system that we as teachers adhere to, but not being a franchise, we were able to design that system ourselves.  It's a fairly simple system, but we're finding it to be quite effective and structured in such a way to provide a good amount of structure for the foreign teacher while leaving enough freedom to allow the teacher to really take advantage of the small class size and get to know the kids - we feel it incredibly important for there to exist a mutually respectful relationship between teacher and student, and be a definite element of fun in the classroom.

To sum up, if you're coming here just to take it easy, punch in/punch out, and go on vacation, this probably isn't the job for you.  I'm not judging in any way, that's how some people like to roll, but it's not us, and it's not what we're looking for.  Don't get me wrong, during our "play time", we like to play, but when it comes to the improvement of our students, our school, and our system, we take our jobs very seriously and will expect the same of the teacher we hire.

So if you're into being in an environment where you'll work a bit harder but have the opportunity to really progress as a teacher/person and feel like you're really making or trying to make a difference in these kids lives, all the while havin' a good laugh, then I think you'll really like it here.

The kind of teacher we're looking for...

To be fully honest, we're looking for a teacher that takes his or her job seriously, but can bring a natural element of fun into the classroom.  And this does not mean, "Okay, game again!", but someone who, even during perhaps a short grammar bit, or during some down time where there would be some free time to just hang out and talk, can bring a certain energy into it and keep the kids attention and interest.

As I said above, being able to strike a relationship based on mutual respect is also one of the most important things to us.  You might not be into "Big Bang", "Girls Generation", or any of that pop music, but a lot of them are.  Looking down on them is not tolerated, and the opposite is actually encouraged.  If we can't talk to them about or at least accept that they're into something we might not care for so much, how can we ask them to ever be interested in us and our interests?  It all boils down to that mutual respect thing, really.

Another added bonus would be a basic level of Korean.  It doesn't have to be high, but a basic level along with a willingness to improve.

The better points of our school...

The staff.  We think we have arguably the coolest staff in the entire country.  Everyone is very down to earth, have been friends for years, have been teaching for years, and all live by the motto of "Work hard, play hard."  Everyone is also very willing to help each other out when needed.

Class size.  Our school has a maximum of 5-6 students in each class.  We designed it this way and think it really helps in so many ways - discipline, striking that level of respect, allowing for a lot of time for each student to express him or herself - really the list of why small class sizes are WAY better just goes on and on.  We wouldn't have it any other way.

Emphasis on learning, not on pleasing parents.  Now, while we are still a business and need to keep the parents pleased, we prefer to do that through good results, improvement, and being honest.  Our school is built on the back of my wife's reputation of giving honest feedback to parents.  We don't mix levels just to fill seats, and we don't give passing grades just to keep the parents happy.

A little bit about our town and the surrounding area...

For whatever reason, the two towns (Suncheon and GwangYang) constantly draw great people who really like to have fun.  It's a great scene, and has pretty much everything you could want.

Both towns are a bit smaller in size (GwangYang - 120,000 ppl) and Suncheon (300,000 ppl), and have lots to offer...
